COGNITIONWIRE / FIELD GUIDE 01

AI agents are moving money. Some stock tokens trade around the clock.

Most coverage is hype. This is the signal — what agents actually do with crypto, and how tokenized stocks really work.

The Agent Economy

The infrastructure is real. The money moving through it is still tiny.

138.5 million transactions sounds massive until the transaction size enters the frame: 87% are under $0.10, often fractions of a penny paid for API calls. Scale is here. Revenue, for most endpoints, is not.

The rails are no longer a thought experiment. Coinbase’s x402 runs on Base; BlackRock’s research desk is watching; Cloudflare and Ant Group are building agent-payment systems. The important question has shifted from “can agents pay?” to “what business actually captures value when they do?”

The honest play: don’t build another paid API endpoint for agents. Build the content, directories, and tooling around the agent economy. Sell shovels, not API calls.

The research brief estimates the average paid agent endpoint earns roughly $0 today. That is a directional warning, not a guarantee about every endpoint: the opportunity is in making a fragmented market legible.

Why transaction counts can explode while endpoint economics stay close to zero — and where the useful businesses may emerge instead.

Tokenized Stocks 101

A tokenized stock is a blockchain token designed to track a real public stock. It can trade around the clock, travel across crypto rails, and sometimes plug into DeFi. Issuers named in the research brief include xStocks, Ondo, and Binance’s bStocks.

01Why this matters

Traditional exchanges close. Tokens do not. That creates a venue for trading price moves outside US market hours, gives some global users access without a US broker, and can make equity exposure usable as DeFi collateral. Availability and permitted use vary by platform and jurisdiction.

02How the 1:1 backing works

In the basic model, an issuer holds underlying shares with a custodian, then mints tokens against them. Redemption and arbitrage are meant to keep the token close to the share price. The design matters: users should verify the issuer, custody arrangement, redemption rights, and proof of backing before treating “1:1” as a promise.

03The risks, without the brochure language
Regulatory fluxThe brief flags GENIUS Act stablecoin rules and US Treasury comment deadlines in October 2026. The rules around adjacent tokenized markets are still moving.
Issuer & custodyYou hold a claim structured by an issuer, not the stock directly in a normal brokerage account. That introduces counterparty and custody risk.
Geo-restrictionsAccess depends on where you live and the platform’s rules. “Global” does not mean universally available.
Thin liquiditySome tokens may have shallow markets. A quoted price is not the same thing as being able to exit at that price.
04Who it is — and is not — for

Tokenized stocks are most relevant to crypto-native users who are curious about equity exposure and understand wallets, custody, and smart-contract risk. They are not a clean replacement for a regulated brokerage account, investor protections, voting rights, or direct legal ownership.
